Biography

Tuncay Yalcinkaya earned his BSc degree in Aerospace Engineering from Middle East Technical University in 2003. Subsequently, he attended the COMMAS course at the University of Stuttgart, where he obtained his MSc degree in Computational Mechanics in 2005. Following this, he served as a PhD researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, where he completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2011. Following a postdoctoral grant at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre from 2010-2013, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford and as a Lecturer at St. Anne’s College, from 2013-2015. Since 2015, he has held the position of Lecturer, initially starting as an Assistant Professor and later promoted to Associate Professor, at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Middle East Technical University. Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to visit esteemed institutions such as Monash University in Australia (2017), Doshisha University in Japan (2018), Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Germany (2019), and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (2020). He is actively engaged in professional organizations, being a member of ESAFORM (The European Scientific Association for material FORMing) since 2014, EERA (European Energy Research Alliance) JPNM (Joint Program of Nuclear Materials) since 2015, and ESIS (European Structural Integrity Society), where he proudly serves as the national representative of Turkey since 2018 as well as ICF ExCo (International Congress on Fracture) since 2023. The research of Dr. Yalcinkaya mainly focusses on the micromechanics of plasticity, damage and fracture in metallic materials, and he develops physics-based models linking ductile deformation and damage phenomena at micron scale to the macroscopic behavior. He has co-authored more than 100 publications in international journals and conferences proceedings as well as book chapters. He has initiated, organized and co-organized many international events such as IWPDF conference series. He serves as an editorial board member of several journals, e.g. International Journal of Material Forming, Computer Methods in Materials Science, Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale etc. Dr Yalcinkaya has received several awards and fellowships, including the 2014 Esaform Scientific Prize and he was elected as an ESIS Fellow in 2024.
