F. Cânâ Bilsel
was graduated from the Middle East Technical University Department of
Architecture in 1987, and obtained her Master of Architecture degree from the
same department in 1989.
She continued her
graduate studies in Sociology and Urban Geography at the University of Paris X
– Nanterre and received a postgraduate D.E.A. degree in this field in 1990. She
followed the joint program "Architecture and Urban Design: Theories and
Applications," and obtained her second postgraduate diploma from the Ecole
Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville and Paris VIII
University Institut Français d'Urbanisme in 1993. She completed her PhD thesis
at the University of Paris X – Nanterre in 1996; her thesis research was
awarded the degree of the “félicitations du jury.”
Cânâ Bilsel has edited
books, published book chapters and several articles in national and
international journals in the fields of architecture and urban studies, history
of urbanism, urban design, public spaces, and urban aesthetics. In
2010, she curated the exhibition "From the Imperial Capital to the Modern
City of the Republic: Henri Prost's Istanbul Planning (1936-1951)" held by
Suna İnan Kıraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute, and she edited the book
with the same title.
After she
received the title of Professor at METU in 2011, she was invited as the Dean of the Faculty
of Architecture at Mersin University, between 2012 and 2015. She served as the Head
of the Department of Architecture at METU for two terms between 2018-2021 and
2021-2024. She is currently the coordinator of the Architecture Graduate
Program, and teaches theory and design courses in architecture and urban
design.
