Özet:
Resource consumption has increased with the rise in population, economic growth and urbanization and has led to the release of huge amounts of waste into the environment, including plastic waste. As a means of dealing with the growing amount of plastic threatening the environment and human health, plastic and plastic waste are traded throughout the world. To manage the flow of plastic waste, new policies, regulations and strategies are being produced by policy makers in different countries to be implemented at a mass scale. Recently, the increasing import bans on solid waste imports resulted in a significant change in the pathway of traded plastics, causing troubles for many countries. In this way, Türkiye has been one of the new destinations for plastic waste trade and the plastic exports in the European Union have decreased considerably with a change in their pathway. The emerging developments have revealed the need to forge an international legally binding agreement for plastics by government decision-makers, businesses and other actors. The aim of this study, which is limited to the European Union and Türkiye, is to analyze the outcomes of changing trends in plastic waste trade and assess the current situation of waste management policies and legislation in Türkiye in line with the recent developments and increasing waste trade.
