Özet:ABSTRACT STABILIZATION OF EXPANSIVE SOILS WITH C / F TYPE FLY ASH AND SAND Türker, Devrim MSc, Department of Civil Engineering Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erdal Çokça September 2000, 103 Pages Most countries with arid and semi-arid climates have problems with expansive soils. Fly ash, which is an industrial by-product from coal burning thermal power plants, is accumulating in large quantities in many countries. In this study utilization of fly ash and sand for stabilizing expansive soils is aimed. According to ASTM C618 naming C and F type fly ash are used with sand on expansive soil for stabilization. Particle size distribution, consistency limits, chemical and mineralogical composition, free swell, primary swell time and swell pressure were determined for samples. After samples were cured for 7 days and 28 days, they were tested for free swell and swell pressure. Samples with fly ash caused decrease in free swell and swell pressure test results. C type fly ash was more effective. With increasing curing time better results are observed. As sand replaces fly ash, reduction continued and sample which includes 15 % C type fly ash and 10 % sand (C 75/ 15/10) with 28 days cure gives best performance.
