Özet:

In this thesis, I examine the effects of socio-spatial stigmatization and economic exclusion, and the coping strategies of youths exposed to these conditions. To this aim, I conducted a field study based on in depth interviews and participant observation in Şakirpaşa, one of the stigmatized neighborhoods of Adana. In this thesis, I object two dominant approaches that romanticize/dramatize or criminalize the poverty-related symptoms such as crime, violence etc. The common point of both approaches is to accept the poor as ‘‘innocent victim’’ or ‘‘inherent criminal’’ by ignoring their agency. Instead of these approaches that make poor’s voice unhearable and ignore thei r experiences, I emphasize these youth’s active agency, by placing emphasis on how they cope with socio-spatial stigmatization by developing strategies. The main question was whether or not a specific spatial habitus is formed in the material conditions of the neighborhood. This study shows that the youth who have to live with socio-spatial stigmatization and economic exclusion tends to acquire a certain kind of ‘‘street capital’’ developed in the neighborhood conditions in order to cope with the neighborhood’s ‘‘site effects’’. This study also shows that the phenomena such as drug dealing, crime, violence etc. that are the source of the ‘‘bad reputation’’ of the neighborhood are also practices to obtain this capital that developed in the neighborhood conditions.
