Özet:The construction industry is congested with many types of project management systems to control and manage construction projects but none of them really look in-depth to maximize the efficiency of the work flow and minimizing waste. The implementation of the lean construction principles into the local construction scene can improve the problems. However, lean construction is complex and can be risky if not properly managed. Lean construction efforts in some other countries have not been successful due to the many hindrances to its successful execution. To implement lean construction principles and to increase the chances of success in eliminating waste, a thorough investigation of the barriers is essential. The aim of this study was to first, understand the concept of Lean culture and its advantages in the industry. Furthermore, to identify the barriers of lean construction in construction industry of different countries. After conducting a literature survey to identify the common barriers of application of Lean principals in the construction industry, two cities both claimed to be active in construction industry were selected as a case study. A questionnaire was distributed among professionals, practitioners and academicians related to the domain of the construction industry. Face to face interviews were also conducted. The data thus obtained was analyzed in order to see the readiness of organizations for transformation to Lean concepts and then to identify the barriers to implementing Lean construction principles in developing countries It was concluded that, Lack of adequate Lean awareness and understanding, Culture and human attitudinal issues and, top management commitment, are the most significant barriers hindering the implementation of Lean construction in the developing countries. Furthermore, this study made professionals and practitioners aware of Lean construction.
