Özet:As a result of its unfavorable natural behavior (e.g., high shrinkage or swelling capacity, weakness, excessive plasticity, poor grading) soft sub-grade soils are not generally preferred in road constructions. Chemical stabilization is used as a solution to improve engineering properties of the weak soil. This study aimed at investigation of stabilization of a soft sub-grade soil by using Borax Sludge (from ETĠ Maden ĠĢletmeleri). The index properties (e.g. Atterberg limits, specific gravity and sieve analysis) of soft sub-grade soil and borax sludge samples are determined with these series of experiments. Also, compaction characteristics, unconfined compressive strength and California Bearing Ratio of the samples are observed. By mixing different percentages of borax sludge (e.g. 0% 3%, 6%, 10%, 15%) specimens representing soft subgrade soil are prepared to test for a number of engineering properties. The test specimens compacted to the maximum dry densities are subjected to unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests after 0, 7, and 28 days of curing in damp room. The results show that borax sludge addition increases liquid limit, compressive strength, bearing ratio, optimum moisture content and decreases dry density, plasticity and swell. Nevertheless improvement level is not sufficient for stabilization purposes except for swell which is satisfactory.
