The relationship between physical activity level and academic achievement in high school students

Özet:

The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical activity level and academic achievement in high school students. This study is limited with grade 9-12 high school students in Kastamonu. There are 16 high schools and 8244 students in Kastamonu. The schools have divided into four randomly. Four of them have chosen for grade 9, four of them have chosen for grade 10, four of them have chosen for grade 11 and four of them have chosen for grades 12. Two classes were chosen randomly from every school. To measure the physical activity levels of the students, Physical Activity Evaluation Questionnaire (FADA) have applied. It is the Turkish version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAC). To measure the academic achievement of the students, e-school grand point average scores were considered. Design of the study was associational. Dependent variables of this study were Grand Point Average (GPA) score and Physical Activity Level. Independent variables were socio economic status, education level of parents, gender, time spent studying lessons, age, time spent with computer and time spent with watching television. For the statistical analysis Pearson Correlation Coefficient, MANOVA and Hierarchical Regression Analysis have been applied. In this study, the results revealed that socio economic status has no significant effect on academic achievement. Age and gender have significant effect on academic achievement. Father education level has no significant effect on academic achievement but, mother education level has significant effect on academic achievement. Time spent studying lessons has significant effect on academic achievement. Time spent with computer and time spent with watching television have significant effect negatively on academic achievement. As a result of this research, it was proven that there was no statistically significant relationship between physical activity level and academic achievement in high school students.
