ABSTRACT UTOPIA TOPIA ATOPIA PLACE-ARCHITECTURE RELATION IN THE POSTMODERN CONDITION AKÇAN ESRA M.S. in Architecture Supervisor: Instr. Ali CENGIZKAN September, 1992, 200 pages. In this study, the influence of the postmodern condition on place-architecture relation is examined, after the explanation of the related condition and Modernist vision of place. The existing situations and theories in architecture-natural place, urban place- natural place, architecture-urban place relations; current trends in contemporary architecture about establishing ties with vernacular, regional, religious and historical contexts both in Western, Islamic-Eastern countries and Turkey are critically examined. The conception of place in deconstructivist architecture is discussed along with the philosophy of deconstruction. Finally, a conception in place-architecture relation where both pluralism and universal meanings can be preserved is tried to be derived. Throughout the thesis, along with the main discussion, dangers in the comprehension of metaphorical meaning of nature, West-East bipolarism, installation of religion into architecture, architectural consumerism and violation of architectural system are other points which are critically discussed.
