Özet:The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of English preparatory school students and their language instructors of the implication of pair and group work speaking activities in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. The study was conducted as a case study with 496 English as a foreign language (EFL) students and nine instructors of English language in the preparatory school of a state university in Ankara, Turkey. The data for this study were collected through a questionnaire administered to students, and semi-structured interviews with the instructors. The quantitative data were analyzed through the statistical analysis program SPSS IBM. For the analysis of quantitative data descriptive statistic were run in order to calculate frequencies and percentages. The analysis of the qualitative data was carried out through the qualitative data analysis software, MAXQDA. Constants comparative method was utilized to analyze the qualitative data and the data was coded through open, axial and selective coding. The key findings that emerged from both qualitative and quantitative data included students’ and instructors’ overall perceptions of pair and group work speaking activities, their perceptions of the in-class application of pair and group work speaking activities, benefits and drawbacks of pair and group work speaking activities, suggestions of students and instructors on pair and group work speaking activities, and finally possible reasons behind not adequately benefiting from pair and group work speaking activities.
