Özet:
The demand for new urban development is exacerbated by the world's rising population, which places great strain on urban areas. While this process creates unsustainable activities in cities, it has become crucial for cities to present sustainable ways to improve the characteristics of the city and urban living conditions. As an example of that, in recent years, urban agriculture, primarily manifested through the proliferation of urban gardens, has emerged as a promising solution not just for sustainability but also for enhancing local food security. Integrating urban gardens within city landscapes reflects a complex interplay of environmental, social, and economic factors influenced by various interconnected elements.
In the unique context of Eskişehir, characterized by distinctive factors, urban typologies, and spatial dynamics, urban gardens are gaining prominence as potential contributors to the city's environmental fabric. However, a comprehensive understanding of their multifaceted impact, encompassing both benefits and challenges within urban life, remains elusive.
While existing literature demonstrates a growing interest in the environmental impact of urban gardens, the nuanced relationships with spatial dynamics and typological frameworks specific to Eskişehir are yet to be thoroughly investigated. Filling this knowledge gap is significant for informed urban planning and policy development tailored to the city's distinctive characteristics.
This research aims to inspect the intricate relationships between urban gardens and the environmental fabric of Eskişehir, exploring their benefits and challenges within the broader framework of urban life. By examining typological frameworks and spatial dynamics and incorporating new insights from surveys conducted with urban gardeners, this study seeks to provide actionable insights for sustainable urban development and the effective integration of urban gardens into the cityscape.
