Abstract

The literature on choices of effectuation and causation lacks a consensus on why and when the two approaches are used, warranting further research in novel contexts. For this purpose, this study investigates the decision-making approaches of entrepreneurs in terms of effectuation and causation in the Turkish video game industry (VGI). Using interview data from 22 entrepreneurs, we first identify the phases of their entrepreneurial journeys. We then examine the entrepreneurs’ adoption of effectuation and causation in different phases. While effectuation is the dominant approach in the earlier phases, effectuation and causation are not mutually exclusive, and causation is more prevalent in the later phases of the entrepreneurial journey.
