Abstract

Focusing on the social topic of EDI, this paper attempts to take a more in-depth and nuanced look at the possible mechanisms behind the mixed results in the literature.  We explore the attitudes of women on boards toward EDI through investigating the EDI narratives women board directors pick at any given time and the various contextual factors that can impact shifts across narratives.  Adopting an inductive approach, we collected data on the lived experiences of women on boards via semi-structured interviews. In addition to the dominant narrative of EDI Champion, we identified three additional EDI-related narratives (Lone She-Wolf, Alpha She-Wolf, She-Amarok). These three narratives are not manifest in a person-based fashion but rather in a situation-based form; i.e., women board directors seem to utilize a repertoire of narratives over time and circumstance.
