Abstract
Azerbaijan and the Caucasus countries have been under the control of the multiple surrounding empires in the region. This chapter explores Azerbaijan from several views, starting with its pre-Soviet independent, Soviet, and post-Soviet timeline. Then, it evaluates the country based on economic, political, and social developments and their crucial engagement in making the state. It examines decolonial discussions in Azerbaijan and how they are constructing the Azerbaijani identity today. Finally, it analyses the competing imaginations of nationhood and describes Azerbaijani patriotism and the diaspora outside of Azerbaijan.
