IRG Symposium 2020: From Data to Knowledge in the Language Sciences, Fribourg, Switzerland, 6 - 08 February 2020, pp.23-24
This ongoing project aims to build an English language education platform and design a corresponding research-based English teacher development program to serve both online and offline educational participants in Turkey. The online platform will be providing a channel for all stakeholders (e.g. classroom teachers, students, parents, administrators, policymakers, etc.) to communicate more conveniently and effectively. Changes on policies and assignments from the administrative level will be better perceived by classroom teachers and students through effective communication; meanwhile, concerns and constructive feedback from the practitioners will be received by the administrators in time for efficient modifications. The teacher professional development program will be focusing on offering continuous in-service English teacher education in public schools in Turkey. The successful implementation of the online platform and the professional development program will be beneficial for providing qualified English language education for learners, advantageous pedagogical support for inservice teachers, and constructive insights for material designers and administrators.
The first stage of this project is the needs and situational analysis of different stakeholders in
the field of English language education in Turkey. Regarding this process, I need to tackle the
questions related to what types of data need to be selected and how to collect the data. The
data and findings obtained from the first stage will be used to build the digital platform and the
teacher training program to make sure that the contents are what indeed needed by the
participants. In addition, another issue related to data is learning analytics. With the collection
of user data after launching the platform, what can be done to continuously update the platform
to personalize the learning material is an essential question.
