Background and Aim: The family impact scale (FIS) is one tool used to determine whether the family is affected by the oral health problems that their children are experiencing. The objective of this study was to adapt the FIS to Turkish culture and to establish its validity and reliability in a group of Turkish parent/child pairs. Materials and Methods: The data was collected from the parent/child pairs for pilot study (n=15), validity (n=140) and test-retest reliability (n=10) in this methodological study. The children were examined for dental caries status with dmft/s, DMFT/S (caries/decay (d/D), fillings (f/F) and extracted due to caries (m/M), Teeth (t/T); surface (s/S)) and pufa/PUFA (pulpal involvement (p/P), ulceration (u/U), fistula (f/F) and abscess (a/A)) indices. Results: A total of 140 children between 6-14 years-old and who applied to a university pediatric dental clinic for any reason were involved. The mean FIS score of the parents was 11.6±7.7. Cronbach’s alpha for the scale was 0.86 and ranged from 0.70–0.84 for subscales. Besides, while intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) value was 0.794 for FIS-scale, it ranged between 0.715-0.837 for subscales. The overall FISscore has positive and strong correlations with the subscales. Conclusion: Turkish version of FIS was created, and it had good internal consistency reliability of subscales and found to be valid in 6-to 14-years-old healthy children.
