Özet

This chapter aimed to explore the theoretical underpinnings of place-based approaches to socioscientific issues (SSI). Several initiatives in science education have been launched with the goal of developing scientifically literate citizens. Incorporating SSI into the classroom is one method for increasing students’ understanding of science’s practical applications. Before they can be considered scientifically literate citizens, students must be able to navigate SSI related to the applications of science and technology. However, in most formal science learning experiences, authentic engagement with the sociocultural, moral, and affective perspectives of SSI is often overlooked in favor of a focus on discrete learning goals. One way to give students meaningful experiences is to use place-based learning strategies when instructing on SSI. Thus, when using place-based approaches to teaching SSI, students can develop a deeper sense of belonging to their local community and a sense of ownership over addressing and resolving these issues. This is why taking advantage of the pedagogical possibilities offered by place-based education when discussing SSI in the classroom is essential.
