© 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.Long embankments are constructed on plains to support highways and railways. Depending on the magnitude of the flood volume, topographical characteristics of the plain and surface coverage of the flood over the plain, embankments may be subject to high water levels on both sides. With the construction of series of culverts through the embankment, accumulated water on one side may transmit to the other side. In this study, effects of unsteadiness of water levels in both sides of a sample embankment are investigated with reference to seepage pattern throughout the embankment. Analyses are conducted using the software SEEP/W®.The findings of the analyses provided means to assess the hydraulic performance of the embankment in view of suitability of the soil characteristics and layout of the layers forming the embankment.
