Abstract

The construction sector faces increasing environmental and technological challenges, with buildings contributing 40% of global energy consumption and significant greenhouse gas emissions. This paper explores the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and smart materials, within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector. It highlights the shift toward modular design, digitalization, and the circular economy as essential for sustainability. By examining the sector’s slow adaptation to these innovations, the paper emphasizes the need for a more holistic, performance-based approach to design and construction through system understanding.
