This book was a natural and desired outcome of our longstanding, yet separate and frequently interacting, joint scholarship on Eurasia. We remain travelers, observers, and students of the entire region. Throughout our 30 years of experience, we have collaborated with numerous colleagues and friends, sharing our thoughts and analyses on various occasions, brainstorming in conferences, workshops, and informal conversations, and co-authoring with some of them. Undoubtedly, we have disagreed as much as we agreed. But, for sure, we learned a lot from them. We are grateful to all of them for their inspiration.
