Being similar to parallel-axis gear systems, application of proper profile modifications in
planetary gearing is an effective way of reducing the adverse dynamic effects, such as
excessive noise and reduced fatigue life due to increased dynamic loading. In this study,
double-relief profile modification design, proposed for high contact ratio (HCR) spur
gears, are investigated in terms of its dynamic effects in planetary gear trains (PGTs). For
this purpose, a mathematical model, in which the dynamic excitation due to gear errors,
tooth profile modifications and tooth stiffness variation is modeled using loaded static
transmission error (LSTE), is employed. Comparisons with the dynamic responses
obtained using conventional profile relief designs are provided.
