The advancements in technology have inspired educational researchers to create and use digital tools to improve students' learning. This technological influence is seen in both hardware and software used in education. However, despite technology being widely used in education, it isn't fully utilized in special education, especially for the benefit of children with special needs. This study focuses on exploring the use of assistive technology in special education. This study aims to understand how assistive technology can help in the education of children with special needs and how it relates to their learning outcomes. This study also aims to create awareness about the importance of assistive technology in educational research. This paper discusses the findings from an extensive literature review, following specific criteria. The findings reveal a noticeable increase in the application of assistive technology in special education research, indicating a positive trend. Importantly, this study highlights the effectiveness of using assistive technology to improve the learning environments of children with special needs. The themes gathered through the literature review include inclusive education, teacher attitudes, environmental barriers, practitioner skills, and technology acceptance. Overall, this research emphasizes the potential of assistive technology to make a significant impact in supporting the education of children with special needs.
