Abstract
The radiative behavior of dispersed media depends on the particles’ shape, size, material, and the distance between the particles. While interactions between small particles and electromagnetic waves differ from the far-field behavior in the presence of near-field effects, radiative heat transfer between particles is enhanced when the distance between the particles is smaller than the dominating wavelength. There have been significant efforts for modeling these systems, and a recent method introduced that is referred to as thermal discrete dipole approximation (T-DDA), relies on discretizing the objects in terms of a finite number of dipoles and solving stochastic Maxwell equations simultaneously for them. BUTDDA is an open-source implementation of T-DDA capable of allowing for the calculation of heat transfer between arbitrary objects and estimating emission properties of objects without relying on Kirchhoff’s law. Here, the surface interaction (SI) module for BUTDDA, which is capable of predicting the radiative heat transfer between particles near a substrate, is introduced.
