Bu çalışma steampunk estetiğinin endüstri sonrası dönemdeki mekânsal yansımalarını, 1990'lar sonrasında Fransa'nın Nantes kentindeki eski endüstriyel bölgelerin yeniden geliştirilmesi bağlamında, steampunk tema parkı Les Machines de l’île Nantes'ın (2007) estetik ve mimari özellikleriyle incelenmesi ile tartışmayı amaçlamaktadır. Endüstri sonrası bir estetik biçimi olan steampunk, 19. yüzyıl Victoria endüstrisi ve günümüz arasında paralellik çizerek tarih ve kurgu unsurlarını birleştirir. Geçmiş üzerinde spekülasyonlar yapar ve geçmişi yeniden formüle eder. Böylelikle 19. yüzyılın sanayi tarihi, altta yatan sosyal, ekonomik ve politik bağlamı ortadan kaldırarak serbest zaman, tüketim ve gerçeklerden kaçış amacıyla sunulacak şekilde moderniteye alternatif bir zaman çizelgesi oluşturur. Les Machines de l’île Nantes, steampunk'ın özünde olan bu ironiyi ve pastişi sadece yeni teknoloji ile çarklar, dişliler ve kasnaklar gibi 19. yüzyıl düzeneklerinin hibriti olan makineleriyle değil, aynı zamanda mimarisiyle de taşımaktadır. Galerie des Machines, Grand Éléphant ve Carrousel des Mondes Marins ana bölümlerinden oluşan tema parkı, Nantes Métropole kentsel dönüşüm projesinin bir parçası olan ve endüstriyel mirasın mimar Alexandre Chemetoff ve La Machine Company'nin iş birliği ile yeniden inşa edildiği eski tersane bölgesinde yer almaktadır. Bu bağlamda, Les Machines'in steampunk estetiği ve mimarisi, Nantes'ın endüstriyel tarihini endüstri sonrası tüketici kültürü için uyarlamakta ve cazip hale getirmektedir.

This study aims to discuss the spatial reflections of steampunk aesthetic in the post-industrial era through the examination of the steampunk theme park Les Machines de l’île Nantes (2007) regarding its aesthetic and architectural features within the context of redevelopment of the former industrial sites of Nantes, France after the 1990s. Steampunk as a form of post-industrial aesthetic combines the elements of history and fiction by drawing a parallel between the Victorian industry in the 19th century and present. It speculates and reformulates the past and creates an alternate timeline to modernity in such a way that the industrial history of the 19th century is presented in the purpose of leisure, consumption, and escapism by eliminating underlying social, economic, and political context. Les Machines de l’île Nantes carries this inherent irony and pastiche of steampunk with not only its machines that are hybrid of new technology and the 19th-century machinery such as cogs, gears, and pulleys but also its architecture. The theme park with its main parts, the Galerie des Machines, the Grand Éléphant, and the Carrousel des Mondes Marins, situated on a site of the former shipyards where the industrial heritage was reconstructed by the collaboration of architect Alexandre Chemetoff and La Machine Company as a part of urban renewal project of Nantes Métropole. In this respect, the steampunk aesthetic and architecture of Les Machines glamourize and customize the industrial history of Nantes for the post-industrial consumer culture.
