Abstract

A commercial port was significantly damaged due to a severe storm that happened in the Black Sea region on January 18-19, 2018. A field survey was conducted at the damaged port one week after the event. Aiming to assess the damage observed during the field survey, a detailed numerical modeling study was carried out to estimate the wave characteristics due to the severe storm. As a result, significant wave heights in the order of 7.8 m were estimated near the port area having the main directions of north-northwest and northwest. The damage mechanisms are discussed based on the results of the field survey and numerical modeling studies.
