A pencil in the complex projective plane is a one-parameter family of algebraic curves generated by two curves of degree $d>2$. The finiteness of the number of reducible members in a pencil plays a fundamental role in the classification of the structural properties of such families. A particularly important case arises when the irreducible components of the reducible members are all lines; it is known that the number of such members is at most $4$.
A conic-line curve is a curve whose irreducible components have degree at most two, that is, a union of lines and/or irreducible conics in the complex projective plane. For pencils of curves of degree $d$, it has been shown that the number $m$ of conic-line curves is bounded above by 6.
In this talk, I will present my research on restrictions on the number $m$ of conic-line curves in pencils. In the extremal case $m=6$, I will discuss the distribution and the number of irreducible components of the conic-line curves occurring in pencils of odd-degree curves.
