Unraveling the unique fingerprints of cold-pressed flaxseed and soybean oils: a comparative study across registered varieties grown in Türkiye through chemometrics

Özet

This study comprehensively characterized the cold-pressed oils obtained from six registered flaxseed (CPFO) and nine registered soybean (CPSO) varieties cultivated in Türkiye. A dual chemometric approach, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), was effectively applied to elucidate similarities and dissimilarities among the oils depending on varietal differences. CPFOs were characterized by high proportions of C18:3 (>50%) along with C18:1, whereas CPSOs predominantly contained C18:2 (>45%) and C18:1 as the major fatty acids. CPFOs contained higher levels of chlorophylls, whereas CPSOs were richer in carotenoids. β-Sitosterol was the predominant sterol across all oil samples. Quercetin and luteolin were detected in every sample, while vanillic, caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic acids, and pinoresinol were consistently present in all CPFOs. In contrast, apigenin was identified in all CPSOs. This study is the first to apply multivariate chemometric modeling to registered Turkish flaxseed and soybean cultivars, enabling the establishment of varietal fingerprints for CPFOs and CPSOs.
