Dolostone conservation with nanodispersive solutions

Dolostone is used aboundantly as building stone in construction of historical structures. Due to environmental conditions or use of incompatible building materials, dolostone can show various decay problems. In this study, consolidation treatment to decayed dolostone with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) nanodispersive solution was aimed with the purpose of introducing similar chemical and mineralogical composition within the stone. Calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide nanodispersive solution was carbonated in petri dishes in desiccator with high relative humidity (90-95%) and high CO2 concentration (~2500 ppm). The carbonation process was followed at early stages (3 hours, 1 day, 3 day) to observe the order of minerals formed and mechanism of carbonation. Further carbonation until 21st day was also examimed to follow products. Carbonation process was followed through XRD and SEM-EDX. Calcium hydroxide was carbonated to calcite (CaCO3), magnesium hydroxide was carbonated to nesquehonite (MgCO3.3H2O). Moreover, dolomite formation was observed to develop in association with nesquehonite and calcite in the following days
