Özet

In this study, the use of waste foundry sand with bentonite and waste rubber as a landfill cap layer material is studied. Laboratory tests were performed with foundry sand (green sand and resin-bonded sand), foundry sand + bentonite, and foundry sand + bentonite + waste rubber (pulverized rubber and strip rubber). The index, oedometer, splitting tensile strength, and direct shear tests were carried out. It was found that increasing bentonite content (nine percent) decreased the permeability below the requirements (1 × 10–9 m/s) for the foundry sands. Adding rubber (three percent) to the foundry sand bentonite mixture increased the splitting tensile strength for all samples, but it also increased permeability. It is found that when properly hydrated and compacted, the 88% waste green foundry sand + 9% bentonite + 3% waste rubber mixture can be used as a low water permeability landfill cap layer material, and these mixtures meet the environmental barrier requirements for landfill cap layers.
