Road cut
slope stability is affected by the disturbances such as geometry change,
widening of apertures of discontinuities, excavation, weathering and stress
relief. A wrong design without considering these disturbances can cause an
incident. In order to assess the stability of rock slopes, deterministic or
probabilistic methods can be used. Deterministic methods can evaluate slope
stability by small computational efforts and compute the factor of safety
directly. Considering uncertainties of the slope properties, probabilistic
methods can obtain statistical results but it cannot determine the factor of
safety. The aim of this study is the stability
assessment of twenty rock slopes located in Western Black Sea region of Turkey
with different deterministic and probabilistic methods. The index rock
properties and strength parameters of the cut slopes were determined by the
laboratory tests. Discontinuity properties of each cut slope were obtained
during field studies by scan line surveys. The stability analyses were carried
according to Slope Mass Rating (SMR), Rock Slope Deterioration Assessment
(RDA), Falling Rock Hazard Index (FRHI) and Slope Stability Probability
Classification (SSPC). The field studies showed that although there is no
concern about the overall stability of the cut slopes, surficial failures triggered
by weathering and excavation can cause significant problems. Therefore the
results obtained from empirical methods were compared with field observations. According
to this, SSPC provided consistent predictions with the field observations. On
the other hand, SMR produced less detailed results compared to SSPC. RDA and
FRHI results were appropriate for the slope faces. Overall, the methods
considering weathering and excavation can evaluate the slope stability more
accurately. Nevertheless, the rock mass strength and thickness of the disturbed
zone due to excavation and weathering should be determined and used carefully
in these methods.
