The suitability of ionization probes for measuring flamelet crossing events in premixed turbulent flames is evaluated in two sets of measurements — one with a Bunsen burner - pendulum apparatus that allows the study of flamelet crossing events under controlled circumstances, and the other with a V-flame apparatus where a steady, laminar V-flame is perturbed be a Karman vortex street shed from an upstream cylindrical rod. In the Bunsen flame experiments, ion current pulses produced by flame crossing events are studied, and the variation of pulse area, pulse height and pulse width are determined as functions of relative flow velocity, probe velocity, and probe potential. In the V-flame measurements ion current signals and estimates of the corresponding power spectral densities are studied. It is concluded that in general ionization probes are unsuitable for making crossing measurements due to limited resolution.
