The authors present an analysis of the expected improvement in distinguishability of a target in a volume conductor attained by means of electrical impedance measurements made utilizing an intracavity reference electrode in addition to the surface electrodes. The results of 3-dimensional simulations indicate an increase in the distinguishability of the heart by a factor of approximately 47 in comparison to using only surface electrodes.
