Abstract

A structure-specific ground motion amplitude scaling procedure has been developed for reliable estimation of peak floor accelerations in multistory buildings. The introduced procedure is intended for the performance evaluation of acceleration-sensitive components attached to the floors of multistory frames. Floor accelerations are highly sensitive to high frequencies in base excitations. Accordingly, higher mode contributions to floor acceleration are considered explicitly in scaling the ground motions in this study. The ground motions scaled with the proposed procedure, and with two other scaling procedures are applied to two different 20-story concrete buildings. The results are evaluated comparatively through nonlinear response history analyses.
