Abstract
Two different electromagnetic homogenization methods, namely field averaging and S-parameter retrieval methods, are applied to a structure consisting of periodic dielectric spheres. S-parameters of the structure are obtained through simulation of the unit cell for normal incidence of TE mode excitation. The extracted equivalent constitutive parameters and reflection/transmission characteristics of the equivalent homogenized materials are compared. Although the equivalent constitutive parameters are resulted to be different for two different methods, the S-parameter results were the same and they were in good agreement with the original periodic structure.
