Inverter-based resources (IBRs) are key components in future power electronics dominated power systems. Virtual synchronous generator control-based IBRs will take the role of a certain number of synchronous generators (SGs). Although VSG imitates SG using control loops, it still demonstrates different dynamic performances and is worth a careful study. This paper mainly focuses on the impact of VSGs on power system inter-area oscillations. SGs in different locations are either completely or partially substituted with VSGs in Kundur's two-area-four-machine system to examine the influence of VSGs on system oscillatory dynamics. The impact of VSG control parameters on local and inter-area oscillation modes is also investigated. The results show that the damping coefficient of the active power loop DPis crucial to system stability. The VSG with a properly designed DPis advised to completely substitute an SG with a high participation factor to provide more damping to both local and inter-area oscillation modes.
