Abstract

Daniel Defoe's novel The Fortunate Mistress foregrounds the accumulation of wealth and the independence of the protagonist as themes, and these intersect, on numerous occasions and in many ways with Holland and specifically Dutch elements brought into the novel.  This paper explores these intersections.
