Abstract

Suspensions of randomly dispersed particles are used in spectrally selective coatings for various applications. One common approach to analyzing the radiative properties of the particulate medium is through radiative transfer equation, where the scattering and absorption properties are estimated using Lorenz-Mie theory. This method relies on independent scattering assumption and can be considered as a valid approach for the cases in which the particles within the system are sparsely distributed. Dependent scattering effects should be accounted for in dense medium cases. One way of achieving this is through utilizing so-called static structure factors in conjunction with the Lorenz-Mie theory. This study implements the static structure factor for the polydisperse particle suspensions predicting spectral reflectance through numerical simulations. As polydisperse formulation of static structure function is only available for a few distributions, monodisperse static structure factor has been used in the literature. This study compares the approaches and identifies the applicability range of these two implementations.
