Özet

This paper assessess how sports had been significant in the history of Republic of Turkey in terms of three specific dimensions it had infiltrated: policies, institutions and identities. In this regard, a particular attention  is paid to the intertwinement of politics and sports, where politics is taken in a broader sense going beyond its traditional scope of decision-making and day-to-day political activities. This endeavour is mainly explored in three periods of the Republic, where the first period lasts between 1923 and 1950, when Turkey adheres to multi-party politics, whereas the second period is between 1950 and 1980, the 12 September coup d’état and the third period lasts from 1980 until today. Football, as the most popular branch of sports in modern Turkey (just like anywhere else) is given particular emphasis.
