Abstract
Quantum well infrared photodetector technology offers vast possibilities for thermal imaging in spite of the relatively low quantum efficiency of these sensors. Recent promising reports on quantum well infrared photodetectors with enhanced quantum and conversion efficiencies call for re-evaluation of the potential of this photodetector technology for the new generation infrared systems. This chapter presents a survey of this sensor technology for single- and dual-band imaging in the mid- and long-wavelength infrared bands. Together with the recent developments, an overall assessment of the technology is discussed in comparison to the InSb, HgCdTe and type-II superlattice sensor technologies, as well as the possibilities of further performance enhancement through utilization of alternative semiconductor material systems and device structures.
