Özet

The NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) was established in 1998 as a virtual institute in order to answer some of these questions from a scientific perspective through developing the interdisciplinary field of astrobiology and supporting relevant flight missions. This study evaluates NAI's activities by looking at its contributions to interdisciplinary astrobiology research and education. The NAI has had a huge impact on astrobiology research; astrobiology articles have bloomed after the Institute. It also created a supporting environment for interdisciplinary research. As for education, both formal training opportunities and informal networks have emerged. In short, the presence and continuous support of the NAI has been instrumental in creating and developing astrobiology.
