Özet

This study takes a student movement as a case to observe the evolution of hashtag activism in a Community of Practice(CofP) context embedded in a broader socio-political landscape in Türkiye. By focusing on the hashtag (#ReclaimYourFestival), this research delves into how students at a prominent state university in Türkiye harnessed the power of social media to protect and preserve their annual Spring Festival tradition to reclaim a historical social value deeply intertwined with their CofP, and how they mobilize a multigroup alliance of supporters, including fellow students, alumni, politicians, celebrities, and the broader public. Through a digital ethnographic approach, we employed multimodal discourse analysis to linguistically explore textual and visual content on social media platforms, notably  Facebook and Twitter as well as video footage from offline protests. This study offers valuable insights into the transformation of student movements, how language and digital discourse play a pivotal role building solidarity, resistance, and the preservation of cultural tradition, and highlights how hashtag activism intersect with and influence broader socio-political movements within a local context.
