Paper-based sensors provide valuable advantages such as availability, flexibility, simplicity, biocompatibility, cost-effectiveness, and portability for rapid single-point measurement/detection of a wide range of analytes in pharmaceutical, agricultural, environmental, forensic, food science, and clinical diagnostic applications. They offer versatile, user-friendly, and reliable solutions since different sensing elements with multiple preparation and detection techniques can be incorporated in one portable miniaturized set. In recent years, the applicability of paper-based sensors has been widely investigated in various fields, particularly in the medical sciences mainly due to their practicality in resource-limited environments, such as in developing countries which may lack fully equipped facilities, trained medical staff, and support. This chapter is focused on the fundamentals, design principles, fabrication techniques, and applications of disposable paper-based biosensors with a look at recent trends along with the challenges and futuristic perspectives.
