Abstract

A model developed for drill bit transverse vibration is briefly introduced and finite element solutions are used to analyze the effects of various geometric and process parameters on the drill bit transverse vibrations. Mainly the effect of cross sectional properties, the effect of the flute helix angle, the effect of rotational speed, and the effect of thrust force generated during drilling are investigated. Also, simulation results are given to show the behavior of a drill bit under transverse cutting forces at the tip. The results presented provide useful insights for geometric and process design.
