Effect on measured shear strength of wedge shear box spacing

The prismatic wedge shear test (priswest) is a relatively new test that enables the shear strength of gravels and crushed rock to be measured rapidly, using a portable frame and other simple devices. In testing which of the different methods of analysis for the wedge shear test is the more reliable for gravels, tests had previously been performed on 5-20 mm gravel with different spacing between the two halves of the priswest box; the method giving the more consistent results was proposed as the more reliable, based on the implicit assumption that as the spacing increased, the measured strength would remain constant. The present study was aimed at checking this assumption by investigating the effect on measured strength of the box spacing. No significant effect was observed.
