Özet
The implementation of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems on long-span bridges has become increasingly critical for ensuring structural safety, optimizing maintenance strategies, and understanding long-term performance under varying environmental and operational conditions. As the world’s longest suspension bridge, the 1915 Çanakkale Suspension Bridge holds strategic significance both for regional transportation and for advancing engineering knowledge related to large-scale bridge behavior. Its comprehensive SHM system with 1,045 sensors provides an opportunity to analyze real-time structural performance and to verify structural design. In this study, an overview of SHM system is represented with the sensor layout and sensor types. Using long-term measurement data, modal identification analyses are performed for the steel deck and towers to determine dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. The modal identification results for the deck, towers, and cables are compared with design reports. It gives consistent results and validates both the monitoring approach and structural performance. Acceleration based measurements are also utilized to estimate cable tension forces. In addition, environmental effects such as temperature and wind are evaluated in relation to the measured responses of the deck and towers. Regression analyses are conducted to quantify and remove the influence of these external factors. It enables an interpretation of intrinsic structural behavior and supports the identification of threshold values for the development of an early warning system. Moreover, fatigue assessment of the deck is performed with rainflow analysis using strain gauge data collected from critical locations. Finally, the response of the bridge under an earthquake is observed and compared with the response under operational conditions. Overall, the study demonstrates the capability of SHM system to capture complex structural responses, verify analytical predictions, and support informed decision-making for the long-term management of the 1915 Çanakkale Suspension Bridge.
