Abstract

Angular momentum expressions and corresponding Jacobian matrices for single gimbal control moment gyroscopes are given for clusters with four and six control moment gyroscopes (CMGs). In particular momentum envelopes for tetrahedron mount CMG cluster is given and compared to the classical pyramid mount CMG clusters. It is found that the tetrahedron configuration offers a much larger momentum envelope than a classical CMG clusters in pyramid configuration. Steering of such a cluster is addressed. It is shown that the previously developed blended inverse algorithm is quite effective in steering such clusters, while realizing the desired torque as well as gimbal angle configuration. © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
