“Diasporic SMOization”: Transformation of Ukrainian Ethnic Associations after the Russian Invasion

Özet
This article examines how war-driven displacement reshapes migrant civil society and ethnic positioning. Focusing on Ukrainian associations in Turkey after Russia’s 2022 invasion, it draws on in-depth interviews across six provinces. Building on diaspora mobilization and social movement theory, the study advances the concept of “diasporic SMOization” to explain organizational transformation during crises. Findings reveal that Ukrainian associations shifted from cultural groups to hybrid actors combining humanitarian aid, advocacy, and political protest. This evolution, embedded in a constrained civic space, demonstrates how crisis-induced mobilization reconfigures collective identity and organizational repertoires under conditions of legal hierarchy and geopolitical conflict.
