Experiments on the burning of n-heptane droplets in reduced gravity

Özet
Experimental results concerning the envelope flame burning of n-heptane droplets under reduced gravity are presented. The parabolic flights of an aircraft were used to create a reduced gravity environment of the order of 10-3 g. The burning of n-heptane droplets has been observed with the KC 135 aircraft at NASA Johnson Space Center, Ellington Air Force Base and the Caravelle aircraft at the C.E.V., Bretigny, France. The results constitute the first clear experimental evidence of the non-steady behavior of droplet burning whereas the spherical symmetry is conserved, by showing essentially that the flame first moves away from the droplet, then back towards it, and that the ratio of flame to droplet diameter increases continuously during combustion.
