This paper illustrates how the equivalent circuit parameters of an induction motor can be predicted from a 2D numerical field solution of the magnetic field. The approach presented requires a circuit-coupled 2D harmonic solution of the field (accounting for saturation) under no load and rated slip conditions. These solutions take only some minutes on a modern computer and are very suitable for the design office where quick solutions are much preferred as the effects of design changes can be quickly assessed. Parameters can be predicted using no-load and locked rotor tests on the FE model. In this approach it is not possible to separate the rotor and stator leakage reactances. The approach presented allows calculation of resistances, magnetizing reactance and separation of leakage reactances. The accuracy level of the predictions is illustrated by applying the method to two different motors from different manufacturers.
