Abstract
This article examines the theoretical and empirical aspects of embedded stems, emphasizing their significance in word formation, language acquisition, and processing. It reviews theoretical perspectives on morphological properties and highlights the debates revolving around the independence and integration of stems in complex word structures, followed by an investigation of how children develop morphological awareness to automatize the processing of embedded stems. It then examines the factors influencing embedded stem activation in adults, such as word length, frequency, and morphology and offers insights into cross-linguistic differences and (neuro)cognitive mechanisms.
